A porcelain photophore engraved with an equestrian scene, produced by the Bernardaud Limoges porcelain manufactory. Lithophany is a delicate technique using translucent porcelain developed in Europe in the 19th century, designed to reveal images when illuminated from behind. Shaped to varying thicknesses, the porcelain allows light to pass through the thinner areas more intensely and the thicker areas more softly, creating scenes of great depth and detail. Highly prized during the Victorian and Belle Époque periods, lithophanies were used in lamps, lampshades and decorative objects, often depicting landscapes, rural scenes, equestrian themes and romantic compositions. The technique combines sculpture, drawing and light, transforming the porcelain into an almost cinematic image.
