This is a complete service from the German manufacturer Hutschenreuther, produced between the 1970s and 1980s. What makes this set special is its size and versatility; it is suitable for dinner, coffee, tea, soups and desserts.
As well as being extensive, the service is in an exceptionally good condition, comprising 94 porcelain pieces in the classic “Zwiebelmuster” or “Blue Onion” pattern, one of the most enduring and recognisable designs in the history of European porcelain.
This pattern was originally created in the 18th century by the Meissen manufactory, inspired by Chinese blue and white porcelain, following the so-called “Porcelain Fever”. The pomegranates, flowers and botanical motifs that make up the design were reinterpreted by German craftsmen in an intense cobalt blue against the luminous white of the porcelain, creating a beautiful composition.
The Hutschenreuther manufactory itself was founded in 1814 and established throughout the 20th century as one of the leading names in German porcelain, combining durability and classic design to great effect.
It is no wonder that white and blue have become a staple on tables around the world; this is a charming service for both a formal table and an everyday table, both exuding an unpretentious and inviting elegance.
